Saturday, May 4, 2024 - 4:00 pm - 6:0o pm Liturgical & Sacred Art Exhibit Opening and Reception Springfield Art Association 700 N. Fourth Street Springfield, IL 62702 The Liturgical and Sacred Art Exhibit at Springfield Art Association is part of the biennial interfaith Liturgical Arts Festival of Springfield. It is a nationwide juried art exhibition. Liturgical arts are all the ways people connect with the Divine through creativity and beauty in the visual arts, in all mediums. The festival is inspired by the beautiful diversity of faith traditions within our own community. LAFS programs are accessible to those of any faith or none. Admission is free. As part of the biennial interfaith Liturgical Arts Festival, Missa Gaia is a contemporary ecumenical and ecological Mass celebrating the Earth, featuring lyrical melodies, dynamic rhythms from Africa, Brazil and American gospel traditions, incorporating traditional Latin and biblical texts and interweaving the voices of wolf, whale and harp seals. A community choir directed by Rev. Michael Riggs, First Christian Church features soloist Blake Martin on soprano saxophone. These performances will call forth a renewed commitment to cherish the earth, audience members will have the opportunity to meet with representatives from Sierra Club Sangamon Valley Group and Faith in Place. Admission is Free.
Earth Prayers is part of the Liturgical Arts Festival. In the intricate connections that bind together the entire web of life form a sacred balance. In solidarity for the stewardship of our earth, lies an opportunity for all the spiritual wisdoms of the Earth to work together, united in a common task – the renewal of this sacred balance. Join in the music, singing and dancing used by faith traditions in the Springfield area. Listen to wisdom from different sacred books, light a candle, work on a community mandala, at the beautiful open-air pavilion overlooking the pond at Rochester Park. Admission is Free.
Antiphon: Verse Responds to Art Responds to Spirit is part of the biennial interfaith Liturgical Arts Festival of Springfield. This is a new art-and-poetry ekphrastic program partnering with the Pharmacy Gallery and Springfield Poets and Writers. The Pharmacy Gallery & Art Space will also present the creativity of: "SPIRITUALITY" a new exhibit with art created by gallery members. Admission is free.
At the Liturgical Art Festival of Springfield, Creation Stories: An Interfaith Discussion, includes panelists from different faith traditions. Every world religion and culture has looked at all the complex and beautiful life on our planet and wondered, how did this all come to be? All religions address the issue of the creation of the universe and are replete with statements on the importance of the harmony between human life and the natural world. The discussion will also address, how faith communities can be responsible stewards of our planet Earth and commit to living out their highest aspirations towards this responsibility. Admission is Free.
The interfaith Liturgical Arts Festival of Springfield is pleased to collaborate with the Children of Abraham. Children of Abraham gatherings are hosted by four faith communities, at their place of worship to learn about one another, cultivate respect, and build friendships at a young age. At the Springfield Art Association, children in kindergarten through High School will be invited to see the Sacred and Liturgical Art Exhibition, share their thoughts, and then participate in an art project. The free program is open to children of all faiths or none. Admission is Free.
LAFS board member Cory Brown is excited to partner with Doug Hahn and Deb Elliott at Laurel United Methodist Church to present a contemporary musical program celebrating creation! This program will feature musical groups from Laurel United Methodist Church, the Millennial Chorus from Christ the King Catholic Church, and many other performers from different faith traditions. Evolving: A Contemporary Creation Celebration aims to introduce LAFS to a new audience. Everything around us is evolving! By celebrating creation through the arts as one people and learning about each other’s religious traditions, we are evolving too. Admission is free.
The Liturgical Arts Festival of Springfield is honored to feature baritone Justin Johnson. Although a relative newcomer to Springfield, Justin has quickly made his presence known, being featured as a soloist with the Springfield Choral Society and performing in the First Friday concert series at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. For this year’s Festival, Justin, along with accompanist Mark Gifford, returns to the Cathedral to share with us a program of hymns and spirituals for LAFS 2024. Admission is free.
The final program of the 2024 Liturgical Arts Festival will feature the three Small Ensembles of the Springfield Choral Society, under the direction of Jacobsen Woollen. Jacobsen Woollen is a conductor, cellist, and tenor residing in Springfield, Illinois, where he serves as Associate Conductor of the Illinois Symphony Orchestra, Conductor of the Illinois Symphony Youth Orchestra, Director of the Springfield Choral Society, and Director of the UIS Orchestra. This program, a celebration of the creation of music through the human voice, will be presented on Saturday May 11, 2024, at 7:30 pm. Admission is free.
