Organized in 1995, The Liturgical Arts Festival of Springfield (LAFS) is an interfaith effort to promote liturgical and sacred art in all its forms. Founding members; artists, performers, clergy, laity and community volunteers, hoped that their efforts would encourage cooperation between faith communities and foster dialogue between people from diverse backgrounds. |
| The first festival held in May 1996 included a visual art exhibit by artist from across the Midwest. This exhibit was named on of the "Best of Springfield" by a local newspaper opinion poll. An award-winning documentary was produced in cooperation with a local public television station, featuring Springfield church art and architecture. Lastly, a series of educational and performing arts programs brought outstanding talent to the Springfield area. Performances were held in local places of worship. | |
| The community's overwhelmingly positive response encouraged the establishment of a biennial festival. Featured are the sacred art exhibit, performing arts programs and educational opportunities for all ages and faith traditions. The 2006 celebration marked its tenth anniversary season. | |
